My pick: Speed, without any hesitation
Why: Because this MV got me interested in Korea history. They also did another MV about the same part of Korea history, I think it’s with the same character, but I don’t remember. This MV talks about a recent dark period that happened in South Korea in 1980 : the Gwangju massacre. It’s a really sad period of South Korea past (among many others), but it’s also empowering since it brought democracy to South Korea. In a nutshell, there was a dictator in South Korea at that time (he took the power with a coup d’état). Gwangju was the center of an uprising of democratic groups, who were mainly organized by professors and students. But it gained all the citizen in this city. It started with an occupation of sort, that was violently repressed by the police, and then by the army. And it went on and on and on. Leading to many fatalities, mainly in the citizen/democratic/student/unarmed group. At a point, some citizen armed themselves, but there was no comparison to the kind of atrocities the army did, shooting a bus that tried to cross the city (that was blocked at some point) and shooting boys swimming in a lake because they thought they were trying to escape the city. So it explain a bit about the story. Going into buses like they did in the MV, picking random people for no reason, torture, shooting protesters, all that happened not so long ago. The uprising failed, but the people in South Korea were so angry that the whole country rise and the dictatorship stopped, the dictator ended up sentence to death, but finally he got life sentence.
So the MV has a great story, based on a true story somehow, it has a start, an end, a climax and all. But because of what it’s about and because of the fact that it made me want to know even more about Korea, it will always have a special place in my heart.
Left out: Maybe Sweet Salt with Five Minutes Before Parting.
Prediction: Gone, for obvious reasons. I understand why, but I wasn’t touch that much by this because I knew from the start they would play that card. That said, I love love love the young actress that play the blind girl, she’s really great. She played in The Moon Embracing The Sun too and was really awesome in that too.
